Following in the footsteps of his father, the late-great Gilles Villeneuve, Jacques accomplished a lot in his own right. Known for his straightforward attitude and brash remarks, the younger Villeneuve has competed in an array of championships and won the 1997 Formula 1 World Championship in only his second season.

Jacques Villeneuve made his competitive racing debut in 1989 competing in the Italian Formula 3 championship. He would spend three years in the series with no significant results to show for it. In 1992 he moved to Japan and competed in the Japanese Formula 3 championship, placing second overall in the standings. The Canadian would then move to America in 1993 and contest the Atlantic Championship where he finished third.

His results in the Atlantic Championship gained him a drive in the Indycar World Series, where he would place sixth in his debut campaign. Villeneuve would then win the championship outright in his second season and triumph at the Indianapolis 500 as well. These performances plus his last name would attract the interest of the F1 paddock, the most notable of whom was Sir Frank Williams who signed the Canadian to race for Williams in 1996.

The talented Canadian would win four races in his rookie campaign, taking second place in the championship, a record equaled by Lewis Hamilton in 2007. In 1997 Villeneuve would do one better, winning the championship over Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher at the final round in controversial circumstances that saw the German Schumacher disqualified from the entirety of the season.

Villeneuve would not be able to recapture the highs of his first two seasons in F1 and would enter a sharp decline. He would race for the BAR and Sauber teams before ending his F1 career with the BMW-Sauber outfit midway through the 2006 season.

The Canadian would go on to race in several other categories including NASCAR, Formula E, Rallycross, V8 Supercars in Australia, and sportscars. He would finish second in the LMP2 class at the 2008 24 Hours of LeMans.
