The younger brother of seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher, Ralf proved his mettle in Formula 1 winning six races and finishing a career-best fourth in the championship on two occasions in 2001 and 2002. The Schumacher brothers are the only siblings to have both won Formula 1 races.

After a successful junior formula career that entailed winning the Macau Grand Prix and the Formula Nippon championship, Ralf Schumacher made his Formula 1 debut with Jordan in 1997. Despite securing a podium finish at the 1997 Argentine Grand Prix, his first season in F1 would prove to be rather average. The following year would be an improvement though team orders at the Belgian Grand Prix forced Ralf to hold station behind teammate Damon Hill, causing a strain in the relationship between Jordan and Ralf. In fact, it was later revealed in Eddie Jordan’s biography that Michael was so incensed by the incident that he bought out Ralf’s contract with the team for £2 million.

Ralf joined Williams in 1999 and would stay with them for six seasons, enjoying the most successful part of his career with the Grove-based outfit. He won his first F1 race at the 2001 San Marino Grand Prix and added to that at the Canadian Grand Prix, with brother Michael finishing second as the two became the first siblings to secure a one-two finish. Ralf would score his third win of the season in Germany and finish a career best fourth in the standings.

His final year for Williams in 2004 was uncompetitive and he finished the season ninth, spurring him to join Toyota where he stayed for three seasons. He suffered a serious accident in the 2005 United States Grand Prix, which ultimately led to the Michelin runners pulling out of the event. While his first two seasons for Toyota were promising, his final season was disastrous and he was eventually replaced for 2008.

Ralf continued his racing career in the DTM championship before eventually retiring from racing in 2013.
